    Bringing the best Estonian talent together with leading musicians from around the world, the Estonian Festival Orchestra assembles for its highly anticipated North American debut during the global celebration of Arvo Pärt at 90. Led by Artistic Director Paavo Järvi, they’re joined by the Grammy Award–winning Pärt specialists of the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir and soloists who include Midori, Hans Christian Aavik, and composer-pianist Nico Muhly. The wide-ranging program features significant early works, including a piece with a historic connection to Carnegie Hall; major works from Pärt’s game-changing tintinnabuli style; powerful 21st-century selections; and more. Together, it’s a stunning survey of Pärt’s singular musical world, performed by many of the artists who know it best.

Hurd shares a rich history with Trinity: He has performed recitals here for several decades and was formerly the assistant organist at Trinity Church when Larry King was the director of music. This concert showcases his lyrical and expressive compositions with choral and organ works that offer a blend of spiritual depth and bold harmonies that will culminate in a stirring and emotional performance.

  • Orchestra of St. Luke’s Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with Raphaël Pichon

    From its mysterious opening movement to its triumphant “Ode to Joy,” Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony changed the course of music and remains one of its most recognizable landmarks. Tonight, the storied Orchestra of St. Luke’s performs the masterwork with choir and soloists under conductor Raphaël Pichon, who recently led a sold-out performance in Boston’s Symphony Hall, revealing that “the Ninth can still be a source of evergreen freshness and vitality” (The Boston Musical Intelligencer). Boston Classical Reviewagreed: “Pichon finds fresh illumination in Beethoven’s Ninth … it thundered.” The concert also features the Carnegie Hall premiere of selections from Beethoven’s incidental music for a never-performed play: Leonore Prohaska.

Originally performed the week following BWV 55, this cantata opens with the striking and familiar music most often associated with Brandenburg Concerto no. 1. A large ensemble of the Bach Vespers Choir and Orchestra also presents works by Praetorious and Hassler, along with the Overture from Orchestral Suite no. 3, led by Director Robby Meese.‍
